| Power to the people | |
Laura Cornish in SA Mining October 2010.
Last month took me on one of the most interesting and ‘eye-opening’ trips I have been on since my mining days began in early 2005.
Thanks to my host, ThyssenKrupp Materials Handling (TKMH), I was privileged to see my first power station – and not in the far distance from the road or from an open-cast coal mine.

| Rand Water - Vaal Barrage |

ThyssenKrupp Materials Handling has been awarded the contract to design, fabricate and erect a New Gate Handling System to replace the existing Goliath Crane at the Vaal Barrage Site. (Vaal Park Area)
With the inclusion of an additional nine lifting and equipment handling positions, TKMH have engineered a unique machine to run on rails spanning over the entire width of the Barrage. In addition to the existing upstream rails a new rail will be installed on the downstream side of the Barrage to accommodate the additional lifting required by this upgrade. Provision will also be made for ease of maintenance on top of the Barrage.
The Barrage was completed in 1923 and is a distinctive landmark along the Vaal River. This posed a unique challenge to our Engineers to increase safety when handling the 27 Ton gates and allowing for operations to continue while being exposed to winds speeds of up to 108 km/h. |
